GOODBYE FM WORLD, HELLO FACILITATE

Martin Read explains the reasons for rebranding FM World as Facilitate. 


Facilitate: ‘To make an action or process easier’; ‘to make something possible’; ‘to help bring about’. When you consider facilities management’s role in providing the optimal workplace for a typical organisation, those definitions have a nice ring to them. So much so, in fact, that we decided early on in our 2016 redesign project to use Facilitate as the title of our new long-form feature section.


Its use in FM World is rooted in a comment from September 2015. Perhaps, I suggested, FM might be better understood if it focused on its role of facilitating organisational performance. (I even suggested ‘facilitation’ instead of  ‘facilities’ management, tongue very much in cheek.)


We’ve come a long way since then. Two weeks ago, the nine month project to rebrand BIFM to IWFM finally came to fruition. You are now a member of the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management, and a visit to the institute’s all-new web site – perhaps first dropping by our Front Desk news section - will tell you all you need to know about its plans for the future.


The addition of ‘workplace’ to the institute’s identity was always likely to leave the title ‘FM World’ out of kilter with the new IWFM brief. How, then, should we re-brand to fit? Thankfully, switching to ‘Facilitate’ was something we’d already considered in 2016. And so, here we go: FM World has published its 311th and last edition. In January it’ll be… Facilitate magazine.


Expectation management ahoy: Facilitate will be an adaptation of our 2018 product, not a fundamentally different one. The fruits of our comprehensive review of reader requirements in 2016 are being updated and fused with IWFM’s aims and goals for 2019 and beyond. We’ll explain more when we meet again in this column next month.


A quick word on that IWFM launch. To anyone concluding that the change project has resulted in little more than a fresh coat of paint, I can assure you, having seen it progressing, that the new IWFM – its people, structure, ambition and approach - is much more than that. Exciting times are ahead. And with that – Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
