FM: Working abroad

The more adventurous individuals within the UK workforce harbour thoughts of broadening their horizons and working abroad. For FM professionals wishing to gain an understanding of a different FM environment while experiencing new cultures, finding a role overseas can be an attractive option. FM World has scoured the globe for FMs who have taken such a leap.

Five point plan - preparing for a big move

- Speak to as many people as possible beforehand; if possible, chat to others who have made the same leap, and individuals from the country who are in the UK

- Tailor your CV to the local style – also bear in mind that the job title may not be “facilities manager”

- Consider all aspects of life abroad – not just the work aspect. Living arrangements, cultural sensitivities, employment laws, as well as the cost of a flight home if required to do so at short notice

- Learn the language – at least the basics – and don’t expect everyone to speak English

- See how FM differs in your target country in terms of property legislation, company structure, involvement with other departments, and the maturity of the FM sector
