Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £115 million contract by Network Rail for the supply, operation and maintenance of its fleet of 13 track maintenance vehicles.

The machines, known as ‘on track machines’ or ‘tampers’, carry out maintenance, renewals and upgrade work, making sure the track is aligned for smooth, efficient and safe journeys.

Tampers maintain the track by hydraulically lifting the track and packing ballast underneath the sleepers to fill voids and realign the tracks.

Under the seven-year deal, Balfour Beatty will work on the Anglia and South-East routes, which are among the most heavily used parts of the UK rail network.

Mark Bullock, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s rail business, said the contract was an important one for Balfour Beatty and Network Rail as it would enable the smooth and safe operation of some of the busiest sections of the railway.

“By operating both tampers and stoneblowers for Network Rail, Balfour Beatty is uniquely positioned to offer an integrated track geometry service to the routes,” said Bullock.

Balfour Beatty will also introduce at least two new tampers for the contract, the first to be delivered by 2021.
