The Essex Waste Management Partnership has named the shortlist of companies that are bidding to manage the county’s non-recyclable waste programme.
The partnership, comprising Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, has recently been provisionally awarded £100m to improve the way waste is treated in the county.
The shortlist of organisations in the running for the contract are:
- Biffa Waste Services
- Shanks Group
- Skanska Infrastructure Development
- United Utilities
- Urbaser
- Veolia
- VT Group
The companies will submit their proposals by mid-May. The preferred bidder will be announced by October next year, with the facility scheduled to open in 2014.
The partnership said that non-recyclable waste could be treated with Mechanical Biological Treatment, which sorts and treats biodegradable waste, producing less methane and reducing the risk to the environment.
