20 December 2017 | Herpreet Kaur Grewal

Carillion’s board has revealed that the incoming chief executive Andrew Davies will be starting at an earlier date than previously announced.

Davies will become chief executive officer with effect from 22 January 2018, at which point he will also join the board.

On 27 October 2017, Carillion plc said Davies would take over as chief executive officer with effect from 2 April 2018.

Keith Cochrane will step down from his role as interim chief executive officer, and from the board, on that date but will remain with Carillion in an advisory capacity for a period thereafter to ensure an orderly transition.

Davies was appointed to the role of chief executive of Wates Group Ltd in 2014.

Before that he held a series of roles with BAE Systems plc over a 28-year period.

He is currently a non-executive director of Chemring Group PLC and brings executive, strategic, turnaround and leadership skills to the company as well as experience of complex public sector contracting in projects, support services and construction.

Philip Green, chairman of Carillion, said: “We are very grateful to the board of Wates Group Ltd, and to James Wates CBE, their chairman, for their facilitation of Andrew’s earlier appointment.  It is a demonstration of how the sector is willing to cooperate and collaborate to ensure the long-term sustainability of UK industry. “
