Five trends will dominate the food and drinks market in 2018 including “scientifically engineered” products
More consumers are looking for food that advances their self-care

Five trends will dominate the food and drinks market in 2018 including “scientifically engineered” products, according to a new report.

The report by market intelligence agency Mintel states that more consumers will demand “complete and total transparency from food and drink companies” which will “will challenge manufacturers and retailers to democratise transparency and traceability so that products are accessible to all consumers regardless of household income”.

More consumers will also be “looking for ingredients, products, and combinations of food and drink that provide nutrition, physical, or emotional benefits that advance their priorities for self-care”, according to the report.

It also points out “the rapid expansion in the variety of food and drink retail channels will fuel the opportunity for recommendations, promotions, and product innovations that are personalised based on individual consumer behaviour”.

Some companies are also “developing solutions to replace traditional farms and factories with scientifically engineered ingredients and finished products”.

Lastly, there will be more demand for “multisensory food and drink that uses unexpected texture” such as ‘fruit bits’ or pulp in soft drinks especially by “teens and young adults of the iGeneration”.

The report is the result of collaboration between 60 of Mintel’s expert analysts in more than a dozen countries around the world.
