BIFM Awards 2017 – Leader of the Year

Andrew Smart, partner and head of FM EMEA at Cushman & Wakefield, has been named Leader of the Year at the BIFM Awards 2017.

Recognised for his series of successes over a 34-year long career in the built environment that began on a building site and has gone on to include major outsourcing operations and even an Olympic Games, the judges were united in their view that Smart stands as one of the brightest lights the profession has to offer.

Having worked for many of the biggest names in the sector, including CBRE, Macro and Sodexo, and now charged with leading C&W’s FM operations in the EMEA region, Smart has tried his hand at, and succeeded in the full range of FM activities.

In his current role, which began as a joint venture in 2011 until being fully acquired in 2015 following the merger with DTZ, he has personally driven organic growth £30 million a year, reorganising the business and injecting new talent where it was needed.

Under his watchful eye, governance, cost control and data management within the operation have all matured while the financial review process he instigated has further driven efficiency.

Regularly appearing at industry conferences or providing commentary on the issues of the day in industry publications, he is well known and liked across the profession and is a passionate advocate of the function as being a ‘people-driven’ profession.

Among the various highlights over his career so far, his contribution to London 2012 Olympics stands out in particular. Having secured a role for Macro on the operations, he led the engagement with the Olympic Development Authority to design and facilitate a full FM service across all the major venues prior to the games’ commencement.

“Andrew has had a huge impact on the organisation and embraced change having moved C&WFM from a JV within C&W to a service line within the newly merged organisation,” said James Maddock, executive partner and head of global occupier services at Cushman & Wakefield.

“The leadership required has required great skill to carry his team, clients and himself to the new bigger and more integrated organisation.”
