BIFM chairman Iain Murray is to leave his job as head of SMC Facilities Management to head up the new FM division of Scottish-based Chard Construction. Murray, who launched Jenkins & Marr Facilities Management in 2004 before selling it to the SMC Group in 2006, will start his new role in early December.
Founded in 1982 Chard Construction has a turnover of £50 million. Its £5 million maintenance division which has traditionally served the retail sector, is to break away from the main business and under Murray’s stewardship will be transformed into a total FM business. “Sustainability will be designed in from scratch together with technological innovation,”Murray told FM World.
Murray described the role, which he saw advertised in FM World, as “the best FM job I’ve ever seen in Scotland”. An equity position, he was attracted to the position because he has been given free reign to decide how the business will look. It is also based five miles from his East Kilbride home.
SMC is currently looking for a replacement for Murray.
