New research has found that changing traditional white-light office lighting to blue-enriched white light helps keep office workers more alert throughout the day.
The research, produced by the Surrey Sleep Centre at the University of Surrey in partnership with Philips Lighting, reported that staff were in a better mood and they performed better at work as a result of the change in lighting.
They were less tired and irritable in the evening and reported higher levels of concentration, focus and less eye strain throughout the day.
Staff even said that they slept better at night.
The blue-enriched white light is thought to be more effective because it targets a recently discovered novel photoreceptor in the eye.
The research, which was published In the
Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health, was conducted on 104 white-collar workers on two office floors.
After baseline assessments under existing lighting conditions, every participant was exposed to two new lighting conditions, each lasting four weeks.
