Free catering to be axed for Coronation Street

17 December 2008

A free food service is to be axed on the set of Coronation Street, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper.

The announcement came on top of ‘Corrie’ show chiefs refusing to pay for the crew and actors’ Christmas party.

Many staff rely on the hot and cold food catering by a private firm because of their hectic filming schedules.

The Mirror said quoted a source saying that the service had been there for years. "There's been cutback after cutback and just when we thought they couldn't cut any more we hear the caterers face the chop. People are really angry."

A spokesman for the soap told the Mirror: "Corrie is being brought in to line with other ITV dramas where people pay for food."

ITV has said that there will be up to 1,000 job losses to save a further £40 million on top of the £30 million announced last summer. It is also dumping the Oxford and Cambridge boat race.
