Roadside restaurant chain Little Chef will close 67 of its 161 sites,
a company statement said.
The sites earmarked for closure have been trading unprofitably for a number of years due to a variety of economic and location factors, according to the statement.
Little Chef said all its other sites are trading profitably.
Between 500 and 600 jobs, both full-time and part-time, are expected be lost, subject to local consultations. Little Chef said it will still have a workforce of around 1,500 after the loses.
“By closing these sites we will be able to focus our attention on protecting over 1,500 of our colleagues’ jobs,” said Graham Sims, chairman of Little Chef. He said that investment will be targeted "on the remaining strong sites and to develop our brand".
