Met Police hold vegetable oil

Generic - Vegetable oil
Suppliers pour over the energy-saving evidence
29 July 2010

The Met is holding its used vegetable oil for collection by suppliers who turn it into bio-fuel.

Energy company Convert2Green and food and catering supplier 3663 First for Foodservice are recycling the Met’s waste vegetable oil for use in vehicles that deliver groceries to the force.

Since March Convert2Green has been collecting the waste oil from the 93 Metropolitan Police stations and using it to power the vans of 3663.

Almost 9,000 litres of waste oil have been collected, saving as estimated 18.23 tonnes of CO2, the suppliers said.

The waste vegetable oil is converted into a B30 diesel mix that contains 30 per cent bio-fuel and 70 per cent diesel.

Director of catering services for the Met Caroline Mortimer said that while the force encouraging healthier eating by members of the force, “in the meantime, we want to make sure the oil we do use can be disposed of in as green a way as possible".
