Cramming more and more people into less and less space to save money simply causes different problems, especially employee stress.
That was the message from Procore managing director Phil Ratcliffe, who told delegates at a recent forum that many modern offices lack a buzz. Even at full-occupancy a firm can actually waste up to 40 per cent of their space, he said. Work is often impeded by providing insufficient space for collaboration.
Ratcliffe was speaking at a Best Practice Forum, hosted by Constructive Workspace and Procore, concerned with delivering a new workplace for the next generation.
Flexible working practices, telecoms systems and managing change are increasingly important in the current economic climate, the 60 delegates heard.
Ratcliffe called for a “connected strategy” involving a wide range of departments within an organisation, such as IT, facilities management, HR, real estate, finance and the staff themselves. A strategy should reflect the business, he added. “Don’t get caught in the hype.” Piloting a new solution is also vital, allowing occupants to “see, feel and touch” a new workspace.
Other speakers included Constructive Workspace director John Paul Flack and telecoms expert Dan Cholerton, director of Aurora Networks.
