Non-compliant businesses "putting staff at risk"

22 January 2009

Over one third of businesses are putting the lives of their staff in danger by failing to hold adequate fire risk assessments.

The research by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) showed that 38 per cent of firms are failing to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. The RRO requires that a “responsible person” carry out a fire risk assessment in order to identify potential risks and that these risks should be reviewed periodically.

Julia Stanton, NSI marketing manager, said: “Responsibility for fire safety lies with the owners and occupiers of premises who must designate a responsible person to make certain fire protection measures, products and systems installed are fit for purpose.”
