Companies across the capital are being encouraged to engage with their employees on mental health and offer training to staff to help detect and aid colleagues who might be suffering.


After taking part in a Mental Health First Aid training session yesterday, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan urged other to follow his lead and called on bosses to ensure that training is made available to staff. 

With an increased uptake of the campaign across the capital, it is hoped that detection of possible issues could be improved in an effort to tackle the lower than national average levels of satisfaction Londoners currently feel.


“Poor mental health can affect anyone at any time. It’s vital that we all work together to improve the mental health of Londoners and reduce the stigma – and employers have a big part to play,” said the mayor.


 “I want London to become a more open and tolerant place where people can speak openly about their mental health and the support they need. We need to ensure businesses and staff members across the city can recognise the signs that their friends, colleagues or customers might be experiencing poor mental health, and are equipped with the skills to support them.”


His call for employers to increase their engagement with the issue is part of a wider aim for his mayoralty to reduce the overall stigma of talking about and seeking help for mental health issues across London. It is estimated that the current cost of poor mental health in the city equates to £3,000 per person.
