NORTHERN’S PARTNERSHIP SAVES EX-CARILLION CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FM WORKERS

14 May 2018 | Herpreet Kaur Grewal

Train operating company Northern has secured almost 250 jobs from collapsed Carillion by bringing its customer experience centre back in-house.

It has also secured a new contract with facilities management operator ISS.

The customer excellence team, based in Sheffield, supports passenger operations at both Northern and Grand Central rail operators, where colleagues transferred across from Carillion to become permanent employees of either Northern or Grand Central.

These transfers took place in Q1 2018 following consultation.

Carillion was also responsible for delivering an extensive facilities programme at 476 stations along with investing £30 million in new facilities to improve the stations.

This programme is delivered by about 200 colleagues, who will transfer to become permanent ISS employees.

David Brown, managing director at Northern, said: “Whilst the collapse of Carillion caused some short-term operational issues, I am pleased that we now have a strong outcome for Northern and those colleagues who have been supporting our operations.

“The collapse of Carillion was naturally very worrying for those impacted and so we’re pleased to be able to secure these roles supporting Northern’s customer service and FM operations.”

Northern and Grand Central are both part of Arriva Trains UK.
