EDF Energy has awarded Serco a contract to provide fire and rescue services during the construction phase of Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station.

The contract, starting on 1 October,  has a total value of £6.5 million over six years.

As a result of the contract award, Serco sees the opportunity to create apprenticeships, which will benefit local employment and it will use this model to recruit new firefighters through the contract duration.

Serco already runs a range of fire services in the UK and the award-winning International Fire Training Centre and has significant experience in delivering fire services to military and civil airfields across the UK and around the world.

“Serco came up with an innovative and cost-effective solution to our needs and we are looking forward to working with them during this important and challenging project,” says Michael Robertson, head of health, safety & environment at HPC.

“We are going to be supporting the HPC Construction Site with fire and rescue services during the complex build phase of Hinkley Point C,” says Ronnie Coutts, Serco’s capability director – fire. “We have world-class skills, expertise and experience in the provision of fire services and we will be able to deploy a highly skilled team to help HPC prepare for and respond to a range of scenarios.”

About 22 existing employees will TUPE transfer across to Serco following a consultation process.
