Sodexo has won a 10-year patient dining and retail services deal with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust while also extending its contract with Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

The trust has one of the busiest emergency departments in the country and serves a population of more than 420,000 across South Yorkshire, north Nottinghamshire and the surrounding areas through its three hospitals – Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital.

This is the first time the trust has outsourced its catering services and will see Sodexo introduce a range of culinary developments such as a new electronic ordering system for patients and new meal trolleys to ensure a seamless service from kitchen to bedside.

Sodexo will also offer expanded opening hours as well as high street alternatives, meaning that staff working at nights will find it easier to have a meal during breaks.

The new contract, which started on 1 October, remains ‘cook freeze’ with a combination of Tillery Valley meals and onsite produced general menu products along with an extensive in-house produced special diet menu range that caters for 14 different special diet categories.

Patient meals are produced in a central production kitchen, using specialist regeneration trolleys, which are then transported to wards where they are served to patients by trust staff.

Sodexo has worked with Chesterfield Royal Hospital for almost 20 years.
