THINKTANK: RANKING ETHICAL WORKING PRACTICES

An ethical workplace accreditation entitled the Fireplace Award has been set up by a property charity called the Ethical Property Foundation (EPF).

It evaluates organisations by their working practices such as the funding of community projects, local hiring and purchasing, and their ethical policies regarding carbon, water, travel and waste.

Organisations also get points for the quality of their landlord/tenant engagement and whether the Living Wage is paid to both staff and contractors’ staff.

Given the difficulties involved in developing and then sustaining these kinds of policies, we thought we’d ask: what kind of ethical working practices do you think should be prioritised?

  • • Rates of pay and rights of representation for employees

  • • Engagement with the local community

  • • Ethical procurement policies
  •

As ever, we’re also keen to get your wider perspective on the issue. Is ethical best practice ever fully realisable in a client/provider relationship? Does a focus on ethical working practices require different kinds of staff with different mindsets? Is ethical best practice a triumph of rhetoric over reality? What impact could an ethical focus have on productivity? And what can the wider facilities management world gain from this focus on the wider social value of facilities activity?

As ever, we welcome your views on all of the above – please click here to take part in the survey.
